This event is a co-presentation of the Bulgarian Cultural and Educational Center “St. Kliment Ochridski,” the Bulgarian Folk Dance Ensemble “Zharava,” and the Bulgarian Music Society

Join us for a spectacular celebration of Bulgarian folk music, dance, and food at Tropicalia, a funky, colorful and spacious 250-seat cocktail lounge hosting live performances of artists from all over the world. Come and enjoy the performances of our kaba-gaida guests from Bulgaria, the “Zharava” Folk Dance Ensemble and other artists from Washington DC. Cocktails and awesome Balkan food prepared by our friends from Balkanik Taste, will be available for purchase during the evening. Bring your dance shoes and join the performing artists and the audience for a live Bulgarian folk dance party (Folkoteka “Izvor”) after the concert.
After 10pm, the Folkoteka “Izvor” and the live folk dance party will move to and continue at BOSSA, 2463 18th St NW, Washington, DC 20009, http://bossadc.com/. Everybody is welcome to join us and dance through the night!

Admission: $12
Late Night Dance Party at BOSSA (after 10pm): admission is $10; free for people who have bought a ticket for the 7pm concert at Tropicalia. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Back by popular demand! After their spectacular performances during the past 5 years, the students of the Music Theater Division of the Catholic University of America Benjamin T. Join us to celebrate once again the anniversary of the designation of the intersection next to the Embassy of Bulgaria in Washington D.C. as “Dimitar Peshev Plaza”. In 2013 the street intersection of 22nd Street and R Street NW was renamed in honor of the Bulgarian Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Dimitаr Peshev. In the spring of 1943 Peshev stood up against the deportation of the Bulgarian Jews to the Nazi concentration camps and launched a strong defiance campaign within the Bulgarian parliament and society which led to the rescue of Bulgaria’s 50 000 native Jews. In 1973 Dimitar Peshev was awarded the title of “Righteous among the Nations” by Yad Vashem.

Classical Music and Folklore: Exploration of National Identity
Hristina Blagoeva (flute), Miles Massoccote (piano), and Christopher Graham (percussion)
A unique concert featuring rhythmically driven classical music inspired and influenced by the folklore of Hungary, Bulgaria, Old Byzantine, the USA and other countries. The program will include compositions by Carl Reinecke, Bella Bartok, Seth Bonstead, Joseph Pereira as well as the premiere performances of works by the Bulgarian composers Krasimir Kurkchiiski and Kostadin Genchev.
This concert is part of the 2017 European Month of Culture and is a co-presentation of the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Bulgarian Music Society
