About Us:
Established in 2009 with a generous grant from the St. George Foundation, the Bulgarian Music Society (BMS) has since been a beacon of cultural enrichment in Washington DC. Hosted at the Bulgarian Embassy, our concert series has, over the past 15 years, become a cherished tradition, celebrating an array of musical talents through 77 remarkable concerts and featuring over 400 artists from across the globe.
Our curated programs artfully blend the traditional with the innovative, offering a unique musical experience. Through enduring collaborations with various foundations, art organizations, competitions, and educational institutions, we have had the privilege of showcasing distinguished musicians, emerging competition laureates, captivating dancers, actors, talented children, and performing groups from diverse corners of the world including Bulgaria, Portugal, Italy, Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Switzerland, Turkey, Brazil, Korea, Ukraine and the United States.
Our audience is treated to a rich tapestry of musical performances, spanning classical vocal, instrumental, orchestral, opera, and contemporary pieces. The musical journey extends into jazz, folklore, Broadway hits, poetry readings, dance, and other cross-genre performances, providing a refreshing variety that appeals to a broad spectrum of musical palates.
Recent seasons have been graced by enthralling performances from illustrious Bulgarian musicians like Theodosii Spassov, renowned for his mastery of the Bulgarian wooden flute (kaval) infused with jazz/folk elements, and legendary classical pianist and teacher Prof. Milena Mollova. The stage has also welcomed the remarkable Trio Clavino (US), Harrington String Quartet (US), soprano Fabian Bravo (Argentina), and jazz pianist Kristian Alexandrov (Canada), among others.
